Salisbury University graduate student Charles Overholt will be traveling to Germany next school year as the university’s first student to earn the Fullbright Student Fellowship.
For this program, Overholt will be attending classes at Philipps-Universitat in Marburg, Germany to study “Hessian Mercenaries and the German Reaction to the American Revolution.” He will be mentored by scholars Drs. Holger Graf and Christoph Kampmann, who have taken great interest in Overholt’s work and have been researching historical issues all over Germany. Overholt will be helping them research documents and discover more information on the Hessian soldiers/
Graf considers Overholt an “ideal candidate” for this position because of his knowledge of the German language and arcane German handwriting. Overholt is skilled in both Sutterlin and Kurrent, which are old blackletter styles of handwriting that were used in Germany for quite some time. His interest in German history stems from his ancestors who were originally from Switzerland but fled to Germany and eventually came to America. His grandfather also served in the U.S. Navy.
Overholt is the university’s first student recipient of the Fullbright Student Fellowship, but SU has a history of faculty members who have been Fullbright Scholars in the past. Seven students from SU have also competed nationally for the Fullbright Student Fellowship in the last four years.

They say the third time is a charm. This saying is not always applicable but it came true for Junior Chelsea Tavik on Saturday.
Saturday was Tavik’s third trip to NCAA track meet in which she represented Salisbury University in the shot put. She launched the shot 46’10.75” which was equaled by Whartburg College’s Sarah Hoffman. A tie breaker is determined by the remaining competitor’s next farthest throw in which Tavik edged Hoffman.
The title was the first ever title won by a female student athlete. Last year at outdoor nationals, Tavik placed third overall, 14 spots higher than her seed, to earn All-American.

Baseball season at Salisbury University is underway again and the Gulls started things off a strong note today by defeating Virginia Wesleyan College 7-4. Salisbury opened the scoring in the third inning with an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Bill Root and added another run later in the inning with a sacrifice ground out by sophomore shortstop Ken O’Neill.
The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan would answer in the top of the fifth as sophomore catcher Nathan Chamberlain hit a 2 RBI double to right field to tie the game. Despite that, the Sea Gulls were able to escape the inning without any further damage and they re-gained the lead in the bottom-half of the fifth with an RBI double from O’Neill. O’Neill had a strong day at the plate going 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and SU’s only double of the game.
The Gulls’ lead did not last long as Va. Wesleyan center fielder Pike Brynildsen hit a double to tie the game at three the next inning. SU only had to wait until the seventh to recapture their lead as they got an early single from junior Hank Adams and then a bit of good fortune as pinch runner freshman Kyle Hayman advanced to second on a wild pitch the next at-bat. He then moved to third after a throwing error from the Marlins’ catcher and scored on another wild pitch only one batter later. The Gulls then added to their lead as they took advantage of another Marlins error on an overthrown ball to third base. Sophomore third baseman Quinn Griffith then added another run with an RBI single and there was no looking back after that.
Earning the win was senior pitcher Jeff Hoffman (1-0) as he came in the sixth inning and pitched 1.1 innings, didn’t give up a hit and struck out one batter. SU’s pitchers struck out a combined eight batters today but they also walked eight, as well. It didn’t hurt them too much as they were able to get out of most of their tough situations and the offense gave them plenty of support.
Salisbury was able to answer anything the Marlins’ threw their way and capitalizing on their errors in the seventh inning played a huge factor in their victory, as well. The Gulls will look to continue this strong start on Saturday, February 18 when they travel to Washington D.C. to take on Gallaudet University in a double-header. The first game begins at noon.

The Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Tournament might already be underway but there is still a lot at stake. The opening round of the Tournament was held on Sunday involving No. 4 York (PA) against No. 5 seed St. Mary’s (MD) and No. 3 Mary Washington squaring off against No. 6 Stevenson.
The Spartans of York (11-8, 5-3 CAC), led by sophomore forward Madi Wilt’s two goals, cruised by St Mary’s 3-0. Junior Sandee Reich forward/midfield registered two assists for the Spartans in the victory. York (PA) will travel to No. 1(Nat. Rank 1) Salisbury (15-1, 7-0 CAC) for a CAC semifinal matchup on Wednesday, Nov 3rd. Salisbury defeated York 6-1 back on September 17th.
The second opening round game involved No. 3 (Nat. Rank 19) Mary Washington shutting out Stevenson University 6-0. Senior forward Morgan Jones tallied a hat trick for the Lady Eagles (15-4, 5-2 CAC). Jones’ currently leads the CAC in goals (24) and points (58). Kelsi Zimmerman posted up 14 saves for the Mustangs (6-14, 2-5 CAC). On Wednesday, Mary Washington will travel to No. 2 Wesley (11-8, 5-2 CAC) for the second CAC semifinal game. In the only meeting this season, Wesley came away with a 4-3 victory on Sept. 16th.
The Capital Athletic Conference Field Hockey Tournament is set for an exciting finish.
Wesley reached the CAC championship game last year after a semifinal upset against Salisbury. They are led by All-Region sophomore forward Madison Leone (17 goals, 6 assists).
No. 1 Salisbury University looks to recapture its dominance in the conference after a disappointing semifinal defeat to Wesley College last year. Senior All American goalkeeper Anna Cooke leads the conference with a 0.42 goals against average.
Will the CAC tournament crown a new champion in 2011? Or will Salisbury find themselves back in the drivers seat as the class of the Conference? There is only one way to find out. Stay tuned throughout this week. The championship game will be held at Salisbury University on Saturday November 5th.
