Friday, September 6th, Salisbury University is celebrating Bubbles’ birthday at 2 P.M. in the Square outside of the Guerrieri Academic Commons. This event is scheduled every year and allows for students to unwind after their first couple of weeks on campus. Even though this event is annual, not much is known about Bubbles the Duck.
Bubbles' birthday has been a celebration for so long that the current staff at the Student Organization for Activity Planning (SOAP) don’t know where the mascot originated. Even Logan Krebs, the current Director of Annual Events for SOAP and the student who planned the event, isn’t sure how old Bubbles is turning. “Our advisor has been here for three years and I’ve only been in the organization for three years. Bubbles predates all of us.”
Every year a new theme is picked out for the celebration, ‘Unleash the Rage’ being the theme for 2024. Some of the attractions will include axe throwing, a mobile rage room, a splatter paint room, and even a snow cone truck. In the case of poor weather, all the attractions, aside from the snow cone truck, can be found in the Wicomico Room at the Guerreri Student Union.
Logan hopes the event will be a fun time for the Salisbury University students. “Event planning and making decisions that impact the student body [are things] I don’t take lightly.” She is not alone as she cites the number of volunteers that will help with the celebration. “We have roughly between 10 to 20 student volunteers that will be there the day of [the event] that will facilitate everything.”

The celebration has become a mainstay around campus and will most likely continue in future years but the age of this duck is something that might remain a mystery. Logan offers a potential solution to this conundrum. “SOAP was established in 1997, so you could say that 1997 is… when Bubbles was born but we’re not specifically sure if Bubbles was born with SOAP or if that was a later addition.” Following the line of thinking that Bubbles was born with SOAP, Bubbles will be turning 27 tomorrow.
