Spirit in the Square kicked off Salisbury University’s homecoming festivities, bringing students, staff and faculty together to celebrate. Originally scheduled to take place in the Square, the event was moved indoors to the Wicomico Room in the GSU due to rain. Despite the change in venue, many Sea Gulls still showed up to take part in the celebration.

Sammy the Sea Gull dabs his way into Spirit in the Square, rallying up his fans and spreading the Sea Gull pride. He throws two thumbs up and breaks into dance when someone mentions the upcoming game.
One thing is certain – Sammy is rooting for his fellow Gulls. When asked who he thinks will win, Sammy responds in the only way he can.
“SQUAWK!” Sammy said.

Sammy’s handler Cole Galdieri feels thrilled to join SU’s spirit events alongside his best friend, Sammy.
He is looking forward to the upcoming game and the many spirit celebrations happening across campus, especially since this year marks SU’s 100th anniversary. He said he feels a sense of pride when engaging with others and sharing the Sea Gull spirit.
“It’s great to feel involved in the student body and to know that SU has these kinds of events where I can just go away from class and get involved in my community,” Galdieri said.

Dylan Thompson likes bringing flavor to SU’s spirit events by scooping samples of SU’s new centennial ice cream flavor “Sammy’s Salis-berry Swirl.” He works for SU’s Catering Services and helps to show how student workers can make campus events a little sweeter.
Thompson began working for SU’s Catering Services because he needed a job on campus that didn’t require transportation. He said despite having to work, it has been entertaining to watch everyone enjoy the event and he is looking forward to playing a vital part in SU’s homecoming week.
“It’s kind of exhausting because there’s also other homecoming related events that I have to work this week,” Thompson expressed. “But it’s still really fun.”

WXSU Member Ace Dickens throws bags in a heated game of cornhole with his friends Will Schemmel and Will Murphy. The team wins 2-1 as tensions run high.
Dickens said he joins these spirit celebrations for the games and to support WXSU, who plays music and energizes Sea Gulls for a variety of SU events. He said he enjoys helping WXSU and takes pride in being part of a club that gives him opportunities to attend exciting campus events.
“I really look forward to feeling like I have a sense of purpose,” Dickens said. “Getting to help with events like this lets me interact much more with people than I am used to, but it also gets me away from being stuck in one place.”

Senior Logan Harris looks forward to starting the week by getting into the Sea Gull spirit, but the free food and new ice cream flavor ultimately is what drew her into coming.
Harris said she has never attended a spirit event before, but Spirit in the Square exceeds her expectations with its variety of food options, including hot dogs, nachos and pretzel bars. Now, she said she is ready to cheer on the Sea Gulls and watch them soar at this weekend’s homecoming game against Kean University.
“God, I hope we win!” Harris exclaimed.
