As October rolls around, the Baltimore Orioles find themselves at the end of a disappointing 2025 season in terms of their place in the standings. The injury bug proved insurmountable, forcing the O’s to become sellers at the trade deadline.
They parted with one of their longest-tenured players and a fan favorite, Cedric Mullins, in exchange for three pitching prospects—one of whom regularly tops 100 miles per hour.
Veteran starter Charlie Morton was traded to Detroit while newer favorites like Ryan O’Hearn, a 2025 All-Star with the O’s, and Ramón Laureano were dealt to San Diego. Relievers Seranthony Domínguez, Gregory Soto, and Andrew Kittredge were moved in separate transactions.
In total, the Orioles acquired 11 pitching prospects and five on the position player side. Five of those names now appear in the organization’s Top 30 list, according to MLB Pipeline
Several have already found success, including Tyson Neighbors, who has been dominant in his first 12 games with Double-A Chesapeake.
The 2024 4th round pick has posted a stellar 1.70 ERA across 63.2 innings in his minor league career so far and has adjusted quickly to his new environment.
Neighbors believe the Orioles program and coaching staff can help him continue to rise through the ranks.
“I’m excited for the player development with the Orioles,” Neighbors said. “I’m looking to maximize my capabilities in order to maintain health and dominate all the time no matter where I’m at.”
The end of the season has been exciting for Orioles fans despite their spot in the standings. Orioles’ consensus #1 prospect Samuel Basallo and fellow top prospect Dylan Beavers were called up recently, each finding success early in their MLB careers.
Other opportunities have opened for players like reliever Kade Strowd and infielder Jeremiah Jackson to thrive since their promotions to the major league level.
The Orioles could buy a big-ticket arm in the offseason like Dylan Cease via free agency, or trade for another.
The possibilities are vast.
The Orioles went 15-28 before firing their manager, Brandon Hyde according to Baseball Reference. They’ve had a winning record since. Samuel Basallo signed an extension, and the young guys will all get opportunities to play next season.
The story of the season is that depth is important and good coaching matters.
