Each spring semester, Alpha Sigma Tau, one of Salisbury University's sororities, hosts its highly anticipated campus-wide fundraising event- Mock Rock. The event brings together Greek life, clubs and other organizations. Mock Rock encourages them to form teams, choreograph dances up to five minutes and perform on stage.
Each team is assigned an artist by Alpha Sigma Tau, but the dance routines, costumes and song choices are all left to the creativity of the participants. Once the teams are created, they're also assigned their own “coach” who is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, to provide guidance and help for each team if needed.
Students who choose not to participate are still encouraged to attend the event and support the teams and performers.
This year Alpha Sigma Tau raised $26,000 for the organization, Dress for Success. The mission for Dress for Success is to help unemployed and underemployed women achieve economic independence by providing no-fee programs, development tools and professional attire to thrive in work and in life.
This was my second year participating in Mock Rock with the club, Girls on Top of the World. The artist that was selected for our group was Shinia Twain.
Initially, we were hesitant on how to create an engaging routine using country music, until GOT President, Claudia Reynold's, creative mind came to the rescue. We performed an upbeat, energetic mix that we knew would be a crowd favorite.
We started practicing in early April and met multiple times a week. With little to no background in dancing, I still found it a lot of fun to work with the other girls to get the dance absolutely perfect.
After hearing all of the claps and cheers from everyone in the crowd, all our hard work over the past few weeks was worth it.
On the day of the event, the auditorium is filled with students and supporters. The event was sold out within the week the tickets went on sale and there wasn’t an empty seat within the auditorium.
Although it’s supposed to be for fun, you could tell that each team gives it their all and wants to win the most points. The energy in the room was electric and by the end of each performance, the crowd was cheering and dancing along with the group.
The scoring was broken down into three sections: all men groups, all women groups and co-ed groups. There were also performances from Poms, the Golden Gulls, and all of the seniors in Alpha Sigma Tau.
The winners of this year’s Mock Rock were Sigma Tau Gamma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Club Soccer.
