SU to host final event on Islamic Mysticism on Nov. 11

Salisbury University will host its third and final event about Islamic Mysticism at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 in Conway Hall Room 317. The event is sponsored by SU’s Fulton Public Humanities Program, which has already hosted two workshops throughout the beginning of the semester.

Here’s what you need to know in case you missed it:

What happened:

  • Professor Emilio Alzueta first kicked off the Islamic Mysticism series on Sept. 18.

  • He guided the audience through a two-day workshop about the beauty, the splendor of truth and Islamic Tradition.

Why it matters:

This workshop was held to inform and educate others about Islamic tradition. This was the first time SU organized and hosted an event on this topic.

The bigger picture:

  • Audience members were encouraged to reflect on their connections between inner and outer beauty.

  • When making these connections, Alzueta’s message was how “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

  • When studying different cultures, we have an opportunity to learn new things about them and ourselves.

What they’re saying:

History professor Emin Lelic helped organize the event.

  • “It is one of the heritage sides of human accomplishment in creating beauty,” Lelic said. “We at the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, as serious scholars of the humanities in liberal arts, are obligated to study and understand.”

Husband and wife Serdar and Kate Manizade attended the workshop.

  • “It’s fascinating to have this kind of in-depth study of something that you don’t find around Salisbury,” Serdar Manizade said.

  • “I had no idea about the peaceful exchange between Islam and Christianity that he talked about," Kate Manizade said. "That was news to me.

“Just how he expanded on the Islamic view of beauty and how far astray modern art has gotten from the idea that there is truth and beauty.”

What’s happening next?

SU is hosting its final event at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 in Conway Hall Room 317. This musical performance will feature guest artists Zelzeleh and Kutay Sezginel.
