We have now officially made it a month into the fall semester, and with the cooler temperatures approaching, it’ll soon actually feel like fall. As the new semester begins to pick up its pace, many students are leaving behind the fun of the summer sun and burying themselves in classwork, textbooks, and their beds. While this is a valid way for students to live out their fall semester, it’s important to remember that the start of a new semester can also be a time to connect with new and old friends and have a little bit of fun when time allows for it. Whether that be trying new clubs, continuing with the clubs that have already been joined, or, as this article suggests, going to see some movies. No matter how students choose to engage, it is important.

Being involved and engaging is a choice students have to make; however, they can make it so it’s not a choice at all. They can make it a commitment to themselves. Students can commit to developing their interests through clubs like Model United Nations, or commit to developing a hobby through clubs like All Booked For the Girlsss. Even doing something as small as following the clubs they’ve been thinking about joining on Instagram can help push them along. Salisbury University supports this commitment with events like the involvement fair each fall and spring semester, which lets students connect with different organizations. Junior Addison Goostree, a student worker at the GSU Information Desk, said “If you don't get involved, you're not going to have a good time. Getting involved will make you feel a lot better about yourself, and you will enjoy your time here much more. Salisbury is what you make it. ”

Some students pose the question, “What about off-campus engagement?” With opportunities like the movie tickets and Third Friday downtown, students are able to engage with the local community. Salisbury University provides students a shuttle from SU to downtown Salisbury during Third Friday events and announces local events students may be interested in.  “It is important that the university has things for students to be able to connect outside the classroom and do together. But then it also is great to go out into our community and look at those benefits as well,”  Kelly Cowger, Director of Academic and Student Events, said.

Students aren’t limited when it comes to joining organizations and/or attending off-campus events. The same can be said about the GSU’s movie tickets. They can be purchased for $9 with a GullCard, $9.25 with cash, and $9.50 with a card. The tickets that you receive at the desk aren’t for specific movies, and they don’t expire! The process of obtaining them isn’t limited by time either, with tickets being sold every day of the week. “The hours when people can buy movie tickets are Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 8 PM, and then Sunday it is 12 PM to 8 PM,” Cowger added.

The movie ticket eligibility has also been expanded to include faculty and staff. This not only allows faculty and staff opportunities that give way to a good work-life balance, but it also encourages the SU community as a whole to get involved. Cowger mentioned she and her partner, who’s also SU faculty, used the GSU tickets recently to see Resident Evil. “Any SU community member can come and enjoy that discount,” Cowger said.

As for the process of using the tickets, it’s surprisingly simple. There are no long conversations at the counter or verifications. It’s just a simple scan.  “You just go there, you say what movie tickets, and when it comes out with the ridiculous price that it is, you hand them the movie tickets, and they scan them, and it comes down to zero. It really is wonderful,” Cowger explained.

Salisbury University has a lot to offer if you’re willing to get involved. Feel inspired by this article to go buy some movie tickets at the GSU, join that club from the involvement fair, or just find time to relax. Choose to give into a great SU experience.
